The beginning of this area’s history is illustrated in the mural: “The Pioneers of Pembroke Township 1820-1850” located on the Champlain Trail Museum in Pembroke.
Several small settlements were established either side of the Muskrat River during the very early years: Campbelltown, Miramachi, Moffat, Sydenham, often changing their names.
The area was known as Pembroke Township. The whole area came together in 1858 as the incorporated Police Village of Pembroke. At that time, the community’s leader was called a Reeve.
In 1861, the Village of Pembroke was approved as the seat for the New County of Renfrew.
In 1877, the Village of Pembroke was incorporated as the Town of Pembroke. The community’s leader would now be referred to as Mayor.
William Moffat was the first Mayor of the Town of Pembroke. He had been a Reeve prior to this, so was his Father, Alexander Moffat.
In 1971, The Town of Pembroke was declared a City.
CAN YOU HELP US FIND THE MISSING MAYORS PHOTOS?
We have been working to gather various photos of the Mayors of Pembroke since October 2010. At this point there are seven missing photos.
We would appreciate any help in finding the missing photos. They do not have to be the best photo. Some of these men were found in ‘group’ photos of various Councils. We will improve poor quality photos via technology.
Our goal is to have this Heritage Mural project installed in June of 2012. It will be another unique style of mural that we have not done before.
