Brief History:

At 123 years old, the Pembroke Police Service is one of the oldest Municipal Police Services in the province of Ontario. On November 15, 1878, the Pembroke Police Force was formed after a motion was passed by the Council of the Town of Pembroke to hire a Police Constable. At its inception, the Police Force consisted of just one officer who was responsible for the law and order in the town. The officer also assumed the role of Truant Officer, Dog Catcher and was responsible for the collection of taxes and maintaining the sidewalks.

Today, to reflect the changes of time, the Town of Pembroke is now known as the City of Pembroke and the Pembroke Police Force is now called the Pembroke Police Service. The present Acting Chief of Police is Dave Hawkins. Although the Pembroke Police Service is rich in history, the officers are highly trained and undergo frequent training to ensure that they can provide the citizens of Pembroke with the highest standard of policing as we face the challenges of the new millennium.

Mission Statement:

We, the Pembroke Police Service, have a mission and a purpose to work with the people of Pembroke and area to make our community a safer, better place to live, work and enjoy.

This shall be done in full consultation with the community and all its members, through co-operation and direction, as well as a mutual understanding of police functions.

We will strive to provide and improve all police services provided by the Pembroke Police Service.

Current Labour Force:

The Pembroke Police Service consists of 27 sworn officers, 5 civilian dispatchers, 2 clerical / secretary office staff and 1 data entry person. Patrol officers investigate all but the most serious cases in which they are assisted with the case by the Criminal Investigation Branch. Also, within the Service, there are officers appointed to firearms and Use of Force Training, Court Officer and Community Relations Officer. Many officers also have additional training which allows them to specialize in such areas as Breathalyzer and Intoxilyzer Operation, Forensic Crime Scene Analysis and Hostage Negotiation.

Public Safety Prevention and Education Programs:

The Community Relations Officer of the Police Service is by in large responsible for implementing the safety, prevention and education programs. Scheduled school visits and information sessions are two of the many ways that these objectives are met. The regular patrol officers often make random school visits in addition to the Community Officer’s visits. Special seminars, such as self-defence training sessions, are also periodically offered by the Police Service. Local media sources are also used by the police to make the public aware of any potential scams to be aware of.

Emergency Measures:

The 911 system is now in place in the City of Pembroke for emergency situations. For non-emergency calls and information, the Pembroke Police Service can be reached at 735-6821 x 2221. Both the emergency and non-emergency lines are manned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We never close.
