Pembroke Shook Mills Lumber Yard

Pembroke Shook Mills Lumber Yard April 17, 1950 3:30 p.m.

This fire destroyed approximately 150 million board feet of lumber. Besides destroying valuable lumber, the fire gutted one home and an out building. The fire made threatening advances towards every home on Bronx Street causing the occupants to carry out evacuation measures. Belongings from these residences were moved to the public works garage. This fire gave fire fighters from Pembroke, Beachburg and Petawawa a difficult time due to intense heat and large area of lumber. The West End Mall now occupies some of the area where the Shook Mills stood.
