Pembroke Downtown Fire
Pembroke Downtown Fire
Tuesday June 18, 1918 Early Evening
The fire was believed to have started in a livery stable in the Prince Street area. A strong north/west wind was blowing at the time of the fire. In only minutes the block of Pembroke Street and Prince Street was in flames. People began to evacuate their belongings from upstairs apartments in the general area. The intense heat along with the strong winds made it extremely difficult to gain any control on the fire. Dunlop & Company's fireproof store helped to stop the fire from spreading westward. In total over 40 families were left homeless The damage was estimated to be over $750,000 dollars. There were no fatalities in this devastating fire. This photo was taken from the corner of Alexander Street and Pembroke Street, looking east towards the current location of Gallery 2000.
