Local Industry
The City of Pembroke, with its established
industrial sector, is the largest commercial/service centre between
Ottawa and North Bay. Situated alongside the scenic Ottawa River in the eastern region of
Ontario, Pembroke offers direct access to the lucrative North American market
to the south. The community is ideally positioned to supply goods and services
to neighbouring Canadian Forces Base Petawawa and Atomic Energy of Canada Chalk
River Laboratories. The City of Pembroke boasts both the McCool Industrial Park
and the TransCan Corporate Park. (See Business
Parks)
Pembroke's manufacturing sector benefits a great deal from its direct access
to Canada's major domestic trading market. The large, prosperous American market
to the immediate south plays a vital role in the export and consumption of
locally produced goods; border crossings to the neighbouring United States
are only a 4-hour drive from Pembroke, and New York City is actually closer
to Pembroke than it is to Toronto. The growth and scope of goods shipped is
a direct indication of the diversity and ingenuity of Pembroke's labour force
and investors; leading commodities shipped include fabricated wood, paper,
metal and textile products. Pembroke's network of transportation and communication
services allow for cost efficient distribution and promotion of the manufactured
goods produced, most of which are bound for areas throughout Ontario, Eastern
Quebec and central U.S.A. The local office of Canada Customs is conveniently
located within Pembroke to ease in the import and export of manufactured goods.
